"I was really drawn to the idea of working in my community," said Gruseke, Bankwell's CEO. "I looked at this as an opportunity to touch something, and at the end of the day go home having just done business with my neighbors."

Since Gruseke's arrival nearly two years ago, the publicly traded bank has flourished under his leadership. Bankwell was recently named one of the “Top 100 Best-Performing Community Banks” nationwide, and has seen growth in both assets and net income. At the heart of their success, Gruseke believes, is Bankwell's commitment to putting the customer first. "If you can't get your bill pay working [with a larger bank] and you're sitting at home at night, you're put in a queue and are typing," he said. "When people call us, they know it's the guy down the street they are talking to."

In addition to individualized service, Bankwell also boasts the financial technology offerings to match. Tools such as mobile banking, bill pay and even retina eye scanning ensure customers are at the forefront of banking innovation.
