DANBURY, Conn. – Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton will submit a bid directly to Amazon to select Danbury as a site for the company's new headquarters, despite the state choosing the Hartford and Stamford areas as Connecticut's official selection.

Amazon announced last month that it was looking for a city to host a new headquarters, to be known as "Amazon HQ2." The new headquarters is expected to create thousands of jobs and bring in billions of dollars worth of investment. Following the announcement, cities around the country pitched themselves as potential sites for the new headquarters.

Boughton had made the pitch through for Danbury to be chosen as the new headquarters, posting a video to Facebook laying out the case for the city. He cited safety, diversity and quality of life statistics as reasons why the online retailer should choose Danbury.

Last week, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced that the state Department of Economic and Community Development had officially chosen the Hartford and Stamford areas for its proposal to Amazon.

Boughton announced on Tuesday that despite the state's decision, he will still submit a proposal directly to Amazon.

“We feel the city of Danbury is the strongest location to service Amazon’s second North American headquarters. Danbury has the resources, as we boast a 100-acre site in direct proximity to rail, air, and vehicular modes of transportation," Boughton said.

"Further, renowned economists agree that Danbury has the most stable and business-friendly environment in the state of Connecticut. Lastly, and most importantly, our ability to draw from a diverse, educated and multi-talented labor pool puts Danbury at the forefront of this selection process."

Boughton said that if Amazon were to pick Danbury as the site of its second headquarters, the city would gladly partner with the state of Connecticut and the Greater Danbury area to ensure the needs of the company were met in full. It also cited its partnership with Putnam County, N.Y., which Boughton said would increase access to workers and resources that would transcend state boundaries.
