"We sell a mixture of items around Valentine's Day, but roses are tried and true," said Phyllis Rega, owner of Phyl's Flowers. "It's still the original red rose. And we always give away a complimentary box of chocolate with a dozen roses."

Valentine’s Day is big business from local stores to national retailers. Americans spent nearly $19 billion last year for Valentine’s Day and could spend close to $20 billion this year, according to fatwallet.com.

During the season, 250 million roses are produced. Many consumers opt for the red roses, which account for 40% of purchases, according to the site.

Men typically outspend women two to one on holiday-related purchases. And don’t forget the four-legged members of your family: About 1 in 5 Americans will buy gifts for their pets.
