Both the main library and the Fairfield Woods Branch Library will be closed Sundays until further notice and hours are reduced on some other days.

An announcement from First Selectman Mike Tetreau and interim Town Library Nancy Coriaty said the library board of trustees made the “difficult decision,” joining many public libraries across the state reducing hours due to anticipated budget constraints.

Effective Aug. 14, the main library will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The branch library will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

“We reviewed the current patterns of use and previous reductions in hours to determine the new schedule,” said Library Trustees Chair Sonal Rajan. “We realize that with every cut in our schedule it means less access to all the learning opportunities our town’s library provides. However, the reduction in hours demonstrates Fairfield Public Library’s willingness to help where it can in the town-wide effort to reduce the budget and save money.”

Rajan said concerned residents may also help maintain essential services by making a voluntary financial donation here.
