Pick Your Own Turns To Apples & Pumpkins This Fall In Fairfield County

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- This is the time of year meant for family fun at the farm, whether for apple picking or pumpkins.

  • Ambler Farm, Wilton: It's all about apples and fall fun on Sunday, Oct. 1 from noon to 4 p.m. The yearly festival includes the Apple Slingshot, farm animals, make-your-own-scarecrow, hayrides, Trebuchet (aka “Punkin Chucker”), children’s crafts, pumpkin patch and more.
  • Beardsley's Cider Mill, Shelton: Expect to find Empire, Cortland Liberty and JonaGold with Mutsu, Jonagold, Empire, Red Delicious, McIntosh right behind them in October with Winesap, Braeburn, Enterprise, Granny Smith and Rome later on. Apple picking is on weekends only. 
  • Castle Hill Farm, Newtown: Check out the four-acre pumpkin patch to pick your own pumpkins, gourds, and squash; there are 40 different varieties to search through.
  • Blue Jay Orchards, Bethel: Apple picking is available seven days a week as is the market where you'll find apple cider doughnuts and home baked pies. Also fun: A trip on the wagon ride. 
  • Jones Family Farms, Shelton: After a flourishing strawberry season, it's now pumpkin time. The orange gourds make a splash Sept. 23.
  • Oronoque Farms Bakery & Boutique, Shelton: A scarecrow festival is taking place Sept.23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. complete with face painting. While here, pick up the apple pie or apple crumb, voted one of best in the state by Connecticut Magazine.
  • Silverman's Farm, Easton: There's always something going on at Silvermans where Gala Reds and McIntosh are currently ripe and ready.
