STRATFORD, Conn. -- The Stratford Library “Books Over Coffee” program continues its 2016 winter/spring series with a discussion Wednesday of Colm Toibin’s bestselling novel, "Brooklyn."

“Books Over Coffee” is hosted by Stratford educator and author Kathleen Faggella.

Eilis Lacey is a young woman who is unable to find work in 1950s Ireland. Her older sister, Rose, organizes a meeting with an American Catholic priest who tells Eilis of the wonderful opportunities awaiting her in New York. Because of this, she emigrates to Brooklyn and takes a job in a department store while undertaking night classes in bookkeeping.

Her initial experiences working in a boring job and living in a repressive boardinghouse give way to homesickness until she meets a young Italian plumber.

"Brooklyn" met with a warm critical reception upon publication in 2009 and was named by The Observer as one of “the ten best historical novels of the year”.

Participants are invited to bring a bag lunch to the program; coffee and tea will be served. Limited reading copies are available for loan at the library’s circulation desk. All “Books Over Coffee” titles are available at the library or on Kindle and Nook e-Readers for loan. Patrons also can download the e-book or e-audiobook through the OverDrive app at the library. The 2016 book discussion list is available at the library.

The discussion will take place at noon in Stratford Library's Lovell Room. For more information, call the library at (203) 385-4162 or visit its website .

The Stratford Library is at 2203 Main St.
