STRATFORD, Conn. -- Stratford Mayor John Harkins continued his summer reading challenge this year, and more than 200 kids met the goal, becoming "Harkins Heroes."

The program -- a partnership between the mayor's office, the Stratford Library and Stratford schools -- calls on kids to read at least eight books from their schools' summer reading lists.

"Congratulations to the more than 200 students who stepped up to read and become Harkins Heroes this summer," Harkins said in a recent Facebook post.

The "Heroes" received T-shirts, certificates of recognition and ice cream sundaes at a recognition party last week.

"My thanks to the Stratford Library and all of the participants for making this challenge possible," Harkins said.
