Shanna Melton is the 2017 winner of the Arts & Culture Empowerment Artist Award from the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County.

The awards, a celebration of individuals, organizations and businesses who have made significant contributions to the Fairfield County community through arts and culture, will be presented June 7 at The Shore and Country Club of Norwalk.

“We are delighted to once again host the ACE Awards, and are thrilled by the many nominations we received, which not only validates the wide range of amazing talent in our own backyard, but also demonstrates the interest and dedication of the many patrons of the arts in Fairfield County who were moved to nominate their favorite artist, organization or business,” said Angela Whitford, the alliance’s executive director.

Melton is an award-winning poet, painter and art consultant based in Bridgeport. In addition to sharing her words, paintings, and ideas with audiences around the world, she has curated numerous artistic events, bringing artists and musicians together to share their work and inspire others.

In 2011, Melton was presented with the State of Connecticut’s Woman to Know Award, given to those who create positive change in their communities. Earlier this year, she received the 2017 Humanitarian Award from The Al-Aziz Islamic Center for “Being a Positive Example in the Community.”

The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County, a nonprofit service organization, was founded in 2008 and serves more than 500 arts and culture organizations, creative businesses, artists, libraries and municipal members.

The mission of the organization is to support its membership—and the cultural sector—by providing unified marketing, capacity building, professional development, and advocacy services. The website, FCBuzz.org is a free, comprehensive cultural calendar where members market their events, and which brings news of all the latest arts and cultural events across Fairfield County to the public.

The awards ceremony on June 7 will feature Tony Award-winning actor and singer James Naughton as emcee and a keynote speech by fellow Tony winner Kelli O’Hara.
