Teens Celebrate Hispanic Heritage With Stratford Library Contest

STRATFORD, Conn. -- The Stratford Library Teen Department celebrated “National Hispanic Heritage Month” recently with its annual Hispanic Heritage Essay & Art Contest.

Teen Department Head Lucretia Duwel reports that a total of 105 submissions came from students in grades 6-8 in Stratford public and private schools who took part in the contest. A total of 94 essays, three poems and eight pieces of artwork were submitted.

Duwel acknowledged the teachers who inspired students to take part this year, including Mrs. Rosenberg and Mrs. Barre (Franklin School), Mr. Carlson (Lordship School), Mrs. Ayres and Mrs. Koch (Wooster Middle School), Mrs. Fraczek, Mrs. Saylor and Mrs. Ebner (Flood Middle School) and Mrs. Simon (St. James School).

Among the winners were:

  • First place: Natalie Miguel and Amanda Soares (Franklin), Madeline Swanson & Leah Foito (WMS), Yasmine Kamel (Franklin), Cortney Stewart and Ramona Munsayac (FMS)
  • Second Place: Andy Vicente (FMS)
  • Third Place: Isabella Gaydos (St. James)
  • Honorable Mention: Damian Whitaker & Yamilex Aida Sanchez (Franklin), Benjamin Casinelli (Lordship), Sydney Ritchie, Emelia Pagano, Abby Ligas & Sarah Sportini (St. James), Angelina Cevallos, Noelia Marcano, Eric Acuna, Emily Beck, Jaiah Barrett, Ariana Rivera, Jenaya Nathan, Bryan Pobano and Sarah Tartaglio (FMS).

As part of its long-range plan, the library is dedicated to hosting programs that recognize Stratford as a diverse community with a variety of cultures and languages.
