Metro-North spokesman Nancy Gamerman said the man was struck and killed by the 10:34 a.m. train out of Grand Central. The accident happened at the Stratford train station at about 12:09 p.m., she said.
Metro-North is not releasing the man's name until his family is notified, but Gamerman said he was a 46-year-old Stratford area resident, according to the Connecticut Post.
Noble Spell of New Haven was on the train involved in the fatal accident. He said he was headed to New Haven for work when the train stopped abruptly. There was no announcement of what happened.
"They didn't say anything, but you saw one cop car and another cop car and an ambulance and fire and you knew something was wrong," Spell said.
He was picked up at the Stratford station by his boss about an hour after the accident.
Train service was stopped between Bridgeport and New Haven for over an hour, and westbound service was interrupted and delayed as well after the noon accident.
As of 1:30 p.m., all Metro-North train service had resumed through the Stratford area. Commuters can expect delays of about 30 to 40 minutes between New Haven and Stamford, though that is expected to dissipate throughout the day, she said. No delays are expected between Stamford and Grand Central.
MTA police were on the scene investigating the incident Friday afternoon.
In November, a 38-year-old Milford man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train at the Stratford train station, near the scene of Friday's fatal incident.
On Oct. 20, a 41-year-old woman from Milford was hit by an Amtrak train on the tracks near the Southport station in Fairfield.
On Sept. 9, a 50-year-old priest in the Diocese of Bridgeport, was killed when he was struck by a Metro-North train.
On Aug. 7, a 28-year-old Stamford resident was killed when she was hit by a train at the Cos Cob station in Greenwich.
