Police are advising residents to just leave the bears alone.

"If you encounter a bear, please go inside and let the bear pass through undisturbed," Milford police said in a statement. "There is no need to contact police if the bear is just passing through."

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as well as animal control "are aware of the bear or possible multiple bears around Milford," police said.

"Everyone has reported normal activity for a bear, which has not posed a threat to anyone thus far," police said.

To deter bears, residents should birdfeeders, place garbage cans inside a garage or shed and clean and store grills. Don't feed bears or approach them, DEEP said.

Residents are asked to report sightings at 860-424-3011 or by clicking here, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said.
