New Haven resident Alex “Red” Borrero, 50, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, heroin and fentanyl. this week, John Durham, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut announced this week.
On Feb. 28 last year, first responders were dispatched to a Wallingford home, where a 25-year-old man was found dead, and police seized drug and non-drug evidence, officials said, including Borrero’s victim’s cellphone and several empty wax fold bags that contained a white powder residue.
The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined that the victim’s death was caused by a combination of fentanyl and alprazolam.
Further investigation into the incident led police to Borrero, who was allegedly selling heroin and fentanyl in the area, which was the source of the fatal overdose. The investigation also found that a second customer died of an overdose in Branford on May 18 last year.
Borrero was arrested on Oct. 23 last year. At the time of his arrest, he possessed approximately 30 grams of heroin and approximately $1,900 in cash.and remains released on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 7, when he will face up to 30 years in prison.
