Darien Ranked Among 10 Richest Towns In America

DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien was listed among the 10 richest towns in America in a new ranking of the country's richest and poorest towns by financial news site 24/7 Wall St.

The site analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey for the five-year period between 2011 and 2015 to determine the richest and poorest towns. Towns were ranked based on median household income, median home value, the percentage of adults with at least a bachelor's degree, and the poverty rate. 

Darien ranked No. 6 on the list, with a median household income of $208,906 and a median home value of $1,279,900. The poverty rate is 5.4 percent, and 80.1 percent of adults have at least a bachelor's degree, according to 24/7 Wall St.

Darien is the only town from Connecticut to make the list.

The richest town in the United States is Scarsdale, N.Y., according to 24/7 Wall St. The median household income in Scarsdale is $242,782 and the median home value is $1,230,600. The poverty rate is 2.3 percent and 87 percent of adults have at least a bachelor's degree.

The poorest town in America is Centreville, Illinois, according to 24/7 Wall St. The median household income is $16,553 and the median home value is $49,600. Only 10.9 percent of adults have at least a bachelor's degree, and the poverty rate is 47.8 percent.
