STRATFORD, Conn. -- The show goes on for the 26-year-old Square One Theatre Company, which is gearing up for a Nov. 5 opening in its new location at Stratford Academy's Johnson House.
The new location means the company can stay in Stratford, which is what officials wanted, by housing it in the arts magnet school at 719 Birdseye St.
Tom Holehan, artistic director, and Richard Pheneger, general manager, said it is just a mile from the theater's former location on Main Street. The company had to leave after 25 years at the site.
It took more than a year to find a new home, officials said. Stratford Academy's large stage will be reconfigured into an intimate 64-seat black box-type theatre for Square One's purposes.
The audience will be seated (new padded chairs) on the stage, too, ensuring that all patrons have a good seat. With this redesigned, modern venue no audience member will be more than 15 feet from the stage, officials said.
Holehan and Pheneger said they greatly appreciate the help of Stratford Schools Superintendent Janet Robinson, Stratford Academy principal Maureen Didomenico and head custodian Frank Kalakay for providing this new space.
“It is only fitting that the Stratford School District that values arts education would partner with a theatre group," Robinson said.
The 64-seat black box theatre also means a greater number of performances for each production. The schedule for each production is 7 p.m. Thursdays; 8 p.m. Fridays; 4 p.m.and 8 p.m. Saturdays; and 2 p.m. Sundays.
Square One Theatre’s 2015-16 season schedule is: "Mass Appeal," from Nov. 5 to Nov. 22; "The Outgoing Tide," from March 3 to March 20; and "Motherhood Outloud," from May 12 to May 29.
Single tickets cost $20 each. Three-play subscriptions are $50 each. Subscriptions are available online or via mail order through the Square One Theatre Company Administrative Office, 656 Longbrook Ave., Stratford, CT 06614.
