STRATFORD, Conn. -- The family of a Stratford woman will receive a multimillion-dollar settlement from UConn Health after she succumbed to a heart ailment in 2011, according to CTPost.com.

One of the doctors named in the lawsuit admitted on the witness stand in the case that was tried in Bridgeport that he “departed from acceptable standards of care” in the treatment of Tara Troy Gambardella.

Medical experts at trial testified that doctors at UConn Health decided to treat Gambardella with drugs rather than surgery, which resulted in her death and the death of her unborn child on Oct. 31, 2011, according to the story in the Post.

Gambardella's death sparked the rise of Hearts and Courage: The Tara Troy Gambardella Foundation , which was established to bring joy to others, to help turn a tragedy into life-changing experiences for others, and to carry on Tara’s personality and spirit. This foundation’s focus is to provide scholarships to college students who have chosen to pursue a career in the non-profit sector. Her husband, Craig, of Guilford is director of the foundation.

Gambaradella was a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in White Plains, N.Y., according to her obituary.
