NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A Coast Guard boatcrew rescued two boaters near New Haven Harbor after their 22-foot boat hit a buoy Saturday night and one person ended up in the water of Long Island Sound with serious injuries.

At 10:30 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a distress call on Channel 16 from a person aboard a 22-foot boat. The boat had collided with a buoy in New Haven Harbor, they were injured, and the only other passenger aboard had been ejected into the water, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Sector Long Island Sound watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a rescue crew from Coast Guard Station New Haven.

The Coast Guard boatcrew arrived at the scene in eight minutes, rescued the ejected boater from the water and transferred the second boater from the distressed vessel to the 29-foot Response Boat Small. Once aboard the RBS, the boatcrew began administering CPR to the ejected boater who had no pulse.

Once the boater regained a pulse, the boatcrew safely transferred both of the boaters to emergency medical services, who were waiting at a pier in Long Wharf in New Haven.

The RBS crew returned to the buoy to investigate the damage and discovered the vessel had capsized outside the main channel.
