Police told the Connecticut Post that they were notified on Sunday by the Department of Children and Families that the two children, ages 6 and 2 years old, were left alone in the North Avenue apartment. When police arrived, they found the place was crawling with cockroaches, and the younger child was on the floor of the one-room apartment crying, the Connecticut Post reported.

The mother, 26-year-old Rosario Perez, returned and admitted that she had left the children alone, the Connecticut Post said. Police said neighbors reported that she often left them alone at night, according to the Connecticut Post.

Perez was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and released on a $5,000 bond, while the two children were turned over to the DCF, the Connecticut Post reported.
