Connecticut Named Second Best State To Be A Cop

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The life of a police officer is not an easy one, but of all the places where one could choose to join the ranks of law enforcement, Connecticut is one of the best, according to a new ranking by WalletHub.

Connecticut was ranked second on the personal finance website's recent list of best and worst states to be a police officer. WalletHub analyzed data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, looking at criteria such as median income, opportunity, safety, department transparency and crime rate to determine the best places to be a cop. Each state was then awarded a total score.

North Dakota was ranked the best place to be a police officer, with a total score of 63.05. Connecticut came in second, with a total score of 59.56. The worst state to be a police officer was Louisiana, with a total score of 33.14.

Connecticut came in first in the "Job Hazards and Protection" category, which looked at data on police misconduct confidentiality laws, body camera legislation, degree of lethal force allowed by officers, police deaths, persons killed by police, crime rate, road safety, number of homicide cases solved, and the number of 911 calls.

Connecticut was named 10th in the "Quality of Life" category, which analyzed spending on police protection, housing affordability, family and singles friendliness, and public image of law enforcement.

In the "Opportunity and Competition" category, Connecticut ranked 31st. This category looked at the number of law enforcement officers per capita, the starting salary and median income for law enforcement officers, salary growth potential for law enforcement officers, and the projected number of law enforcement officers per capita in 2024.
