Barry Podber, 77, of Pierce Street, was charged with evading responsibility and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, police said.

The bicyclist, who was not identified, sustained several injuries and was transported to Bridgeport Hospital.

At about noon Tuesday, Fairfield police received multiple 911 calls that a bicyclist had been struck by a car near the southbound entrance to the Merritt Parkway on Black Rock Turnpike.

The gray vehicle fled south on the Merritt and was later stopped by Westport police officers heading northbound near Exit 42, police said.

The car had significant front-end damage that matched evidence at the crash site, police said.

Podber was held on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 22.

The crash is under investigation.
