Ryan Capozziello, 18, lost control of the Jeep, which rolled, hit two trees and caught fire, the Easton Courier said.

Capozziello turned himself in to Redding police on Wednesday, Oct. 18, and was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and five counts of second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, police told the Courier.

He was released on $100,000 bond for an appearance in Danbury Superior Court, the Easton Courier said.

The serious one-car crash occurred at about 5:45 p.m. Friday, April 14, near Route 107 and Umpawaug Road. A Jeep Liberty lost control, struck a tree and caught fire, police said. The road was closed for six hours after the crash.

The teenagers, who were all “critically and seriously injured,” are:

  • Thomas Bull, 18, of Fairfield,
  • Ryan Capozziello, 18, of Fairfield,
  • Grant Ciccarello, 16 of Redding,
  • Ryan Gombos, 16, of Easton,
  • Allison Loder, 17, of Easton, and
  • Janelle Pompea, 16, of Redding.

Two teenage passengers were ejected, and passersby pulled the others out of the Jeep before first responders arrived, police said.

All the teens were hospitalized after the crash; all have since recovered.

At the time of the accident, Redding Police Chief Doug Fuchs said it could take months to determine what led to the crash.

The two Easton and two Redding teenagers attended Joel Barlow High School, school officials said. One teen from Fairfield attended Warde High School, police said.
