Police said they are close to making arrests in the attack on the Mamaroneck teenager, who was beaten and robbed of his cellphone near the train station during the evening rush hour Wednesday.

A gang of about 15 teenagers were involved in the assault on the 15-year-old boy, according to police. Many of the suspects fled the area, including along the train tracks, police said.

Late Wednesday, Sgt. Sandra DiRuzza, a spokeswoman with the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department, said that police have several suspects in New Rochelle and that charges are pending.

DiRuzza said police received a 911 call at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday on the assault.

Mamaroneck police officers responded to the caller’s location — the upper ramp of the Mamaroneck Train Station on the southbound side.

Officers determined the assault had occurred on Andrew Street. As a police officer was speaking with the mother of the victim, the officer saw several possible suspects flee in multiple directions--some via the northbound train tracks.

Metro-North was notified to temporarily suspend train service in the area.

Meredith Daniels, a spokeswoman for Metro-North railroad, said, "We were assisting Mamaroneck PD. They were pursuing a number of people who wound up on our tracks near Mamaroneck station. . . ."

Daniels added: "We needed to de-energize the tracks between Mamaroneck and Harrison. This caused delays as it was peak PM rush."

Some train delays continued until about 10 p.m. for trains on the New Haven Lines.

Town of Mamaroneck Police assisted in a canvass of the location. Westchester County Aviation Unit also responded to help with an aerial search of the area.

A preliminary investigation determined that the teenage boy from Mamaroneck Village was walking on Andrew Street when he was approached by a large group of up to 15 unknown teens, police said. According to the police, the group surrounded the victim and began assaulting him and then took his cellphone before leaving the area. The teen sustained minor injuries, police said.

Several suspects from New Rochelle have been detained and charges are being determined, police said.
