Johnny Diaz, 21, of Platt Street, was arrested on a warrant and charged with first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, police said. He was held on $75,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 25, police said.
The victim told police he was looking for a used iPhone on the website OfferUp — billed as “the simpler way to buy and sell locally” — and found one offered by a man identified as “John.” The two arranged to meet on Browns Lane in Fairfield on Nov. 15, police said.
When “John” showed up he was accompanied by another man, had a handgun and threatened to kill the victim, police said. They took the victim’s cash, cell phone and car keys, leaving him to run to a nearby house to call for help.
Detectives reviewed “John’s” account on OfferUp, which was associated with a Google account set up by Diaz. The victim’s description of the suspect matched photos on Diaz’s Facebook page, police said.
When contacted, Diaz admitted to the crime and turned himself in Jan 16, police said.
