Officers dispatched to Grand Street learned that a resident had started his 2008 GMC Denali and left it running in his driveway to warm up at about 8 a.m., police said. The man was armed with some kind of cutting instrument, perhaps a knife or box cutter, police said.

While waiting for the school bus with his children, the victim saw a white man walk over to the vehicle, open the driver side door and get in, police said.

The victim confronted the suspect, who drove away but was unsuccessful in stopping the suspect, police said. The victim had to jump out of the way of the accelerating Denali while it left the driveway, police said.

As officers were investigating, they were approached by two other residents who had tires slashed on their vehicles by the same suspect, police said.

A description of the stolen vehicle and the suspect was transmitted, and shortly thereafter the suspect and vehicle were spotted at Beaver Street and West Street headed west, police said.

An officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the Denali continued to travel with traffic and refused to stop for the officer, police said.

The officer disengaged from his attempt to stop it, and the Denali proceeded to head onto I-84 westbound, police said.

The suspect was described a white man, about 5-foot-8, and in late 30s to early 40s. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.

The case is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer John Dickinson at 203-797-4611 Ext. 601.
