MILFORD, Conn. — Officers found a homemade explosive device in the home of a Milford man who was charged with threatening his former co-workers last week, according to police.

Milford Police said that officers responded to Stevens Ford on Bridgeport Avenue in Milford on Wednesday morning on a threatening report. They learned that 52-year-old Richard Dunn of Milford had been terminated from his position at the dealership on Dec. 1, and that he had come back on Dec. 5 to pick up his final paycheck.

While he was there, Dunn made statements about harming other employees using an explosive device, according to police.

Dunn arrived back at the dealership while officers were taking a statement from an employee, and claimed he needed an oil change, police said. The officers spoke with Dunn about the incident, and ultimately committed him for a psychiatric evaluation, according to police.

A search of his car did not turn up any explosive devices or weapons, but when police searched his home later that evening, they found a homemade explosive device, described as an M-80 type explosive with BBs glued around it, according to police.

Police said they also found several BB guns, an electronic defense weapon, knives, swords, and a bow and arrow. The state police Bomb Squad arrived on scene and took control of the explosive device, police said.

Dunn has so far been charged with first-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace, but police said that detectives on the case will move forward and pursue additional charges. Dunn is a convicted felon, and is prohibited from possessing any weapons, police said. He was held on a $25,000 bond and went to court on Dec. 7.
