STRATFORD, Conn. — Reports of a possible missing person in the water near the Seawall in Stratford was a false alarm, the Stratford Police Department said in a Tweet just before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

At about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, the Stratford Police Department said via Twitter that it had joined an active search for a missing person with the Stratford Fire Department, police and fire departments of neighboring towns and the U.S. Coast Guard.

But just before 9 p.m., the police department said via Twitter that the search had been called off.

"SFD recovered a float that had blown out to sea and may have been mistaken for a person in distress," police said.
