STRATFORD, Conn. -- Susan Barksdale, a former school board member was tapped Sunday as the Republican candidate to run against Democrat Joseph Gresko in the special election to fill the space left open following the death of state Rep. Terry Backer, according to the Connecticut Post.
Barksdale was selected during a caucus of the Republican Town Committee, said the Post.
Supporters say Barksdale knows the area and the issues facing Stratford, the story said.
Backer, 61, an outspoken and colorful environmental advocate who served as the Long Island Soundkeeper, died Dec. 14 after battling brain cancer for five years, the story said.
The special election will take place Feb. 2.
