McMahon is the co-founder of the Stamford-based WWE and former Republican candidate for Senate. She was picked by President Donald Trump in December to head the SBA in his new administration.
Her nomination was passed with a vote of 19-1, with U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) casting the only "no" vote.
In committee hearings for her nomination, McMahon said her experience as an entrepreneur has helped her understand the challenges that small business owners face across the country, and would enable her to better assist them as head of the SBA. She added that while campaigning across the state in her two Senate runs in 2010 and 2012, she met with many business owners and discussed many of their concerns.
She was joined in her confirmation hearing by former political rivals, Democratic U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy. Despite campaigning against both senators in her election bids, they praised her experience and business expertise. Those sentiments were echoed by other senators following her committee approval Tuesday.
“In her nomination hearing last week, Mrs. McMahon made it very clear that she has the experience, understanding, and instincts necessary to bolster America’s small business community and advocate for much-needed regulatory reforms," said U.S. Sen. Jim Risch (R-ID), Chairman of the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
"During her confirmation hearing, I was pleased to hear that Mrs. McMahon will serve as a passionate advocate for small businesses and that she believes the SBA should continue as a cabinet-level, standalone agency," said U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the committee. I look forward to working with Mrs. McMahon to help American small businesses succeed.”
