Harkin, who has been mayor since 2009, made the announcement to a lunch meeting of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council and the Rotary Club as part of his State of the Town speech, the Post said.

Two hallmarks of his time in office are keeping Sikorsky Aircraft in town after the sale to Lockheed and completing a $44 million runway safety zone at Sikorsky Memorial Airport, but his plan to sell the wastewater treatment plant failed, the Post said.

Harkins also denied rumors that he would join the staff of the Small Business Administration in Washington, the Post said.

Democratic Town Committee Chairman Stephanie Philips has announced her candidacy for mayor as has Joe Paul, a member of the Zoning Commission who lost to Harkins in the 2013 election.
