The National Weather Service confirmed it was a weak EF-0 tornado. The path of the storm was 50 yards wide and 2.16 miles long. No fatalities or injuries were reported, the weather service said.
Based on doppler weather radar data, information provided by local broadcast media and emergency management, the National Weather Service said that as a severe thunderstorm moved east across Southern New Haven County, a small weak tornado briefly touched down just south of North Haven.
Wind damage occurred on a line from Quinnipiac Avenue near the Montowese section east to Barberry Road. Wind damage was reported on Quinnipiac Avenue, Village Street, Fitch Street, Governors Drive, Montowese Avenue by Cloudland, Montowese Avenue, and Nettleton Avenue, the weather service said.
On Village Street, an 8-by-10-foot shed was lifted about 15 feet up in a tree, the weather service said.
Damage was mainly limited to trees that fell onto power lines and cars with only minor structural damage, , the weather service said. United Illuminating was not reporting any power outages in the area.
In a Facebook post, the North Haven Police Department said it will continue with high visibility patrols in the affected area.
"Although it is tempting to explore the affected neighborhoods, we ask that residents remain home for their safety, and the safety of emergency crews," the post said.
"There are trees and power lines down, and several homes have been damaged due to the weather," the Facebook post says.
