Connecticut Dems Outraged By Trump's Withdrawal From Paris Climate Pact

Democratic leaders in Connecticut slammed the decision by President Donald Trump to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, calling it everything from a "grave mistake" to a "moral abomination" and saying the action will have deadly consequences.

“Leaving the Paris Accord is a moral abomination," U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy said Thursday afternoon. "Our duty, as temporary occupants of this earth, is to leave the planet for our children and grandchildren in at least as good a condition as we found it. By turning our back on the global effort to stop the catastrophic warming of our planet in such a public and spiteful way, President Trump risks dooming the future of the planet and the future of our civilization."

The Paris Climate Agreement is the largest multilateral cooperative agreement ever reached to address the challenge of global climate change, signed by nearly every country in the world.

"If climate change continues unchecked, the great coastal cities of the world will be wiped out, crops will fail, and people will die. That's not hyperbole – that’s science," said Murphy.

Gov. Dannel Malloy also blasted Trump's decision.

“Withdrawing the United States from the Paris Agreement is a grave mistake – and it is our future generations who will pay the price," Malloy said. "History will judge this presidential administration harshly for its collective failure to address one of the most pressing global issues of our lifetime."

Last month, Malloy and 11 other governors wrote a letter to Trump urging him not to pull out of the agreement.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said America has been made a lesser nation, "in jobs and technology, in innovation and leadership, in saving our planet and rolling back the progress we’ve made in combatting climate change. ... The looming disaster of climate change is now on the shoulders of those in the Trump Administration who have undermined our credibility around the world, and jeopardized the safety and prosperity of future generations.”

U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (D-4th District) called it "a terrible decision that leads us down a path to rising sea levels and destructive weather that will wreak havoc on our planet. Drought, climate refugees and competition over dwindling resources will destabilize global security. Without a coordinated global effort to combat climate change, the future looks bleak. ... This is a shameful day.”

U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-5th District) said the decision is "a mistake for American jobs, American innovation, American leadership in the world, and the future of the planet. ... I urge the President and his advisers to consider the enormous advantages to America of continuing to honor the Paris Accord and to join virtually every other country on the planet in siding with science."
