STRATFORD, Conn. — At least 40 teachers in Stratford will be laid off, starting in January, as part of an effort to cut $700,000 from the budget, according to the Stratford Star.

School Superintendent Janet Robinson had proposed a two-day furlough for all district personnel, but that was rejected by the teachers union, the Star said.

The unions for the administrators, custodians and secretaries voted to take the furlough days, the Star said.

The midyear layoffs will be in effect for Jan. 18, the Star said.

Classes may be closed or combined in the elementary schools and high schools because of the layoffs, the Star said.

The lost $2.89 million in state Education Cost Sharing grants, and the district is working under the same $106.8 million budget for last fiscal year because the Town Council has not passed a budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year, the Star said.

Even with the proposed closures, the district would have met the state-mandated 180 days of classes and saved $350,000, Robinson told the Stratford Star.
